The heating system

Your home can be heated in a number of ways:

  • Mains gas central heating
  • Storage heaters which use cheaper night-time electricity
  • Oil-fired central heating
  • Gas fires in individual rooms
  • Solid fuel (e.g. coal or wood) fires.

Your hot water may be heated by the same system that heats the home, or by a separate system.

Making improvements to your heating system, e.g. adding temperature controls, can pay for itself in only a few years.

Depending on your circumstances, there may be grants available so that you can have central heating installed, or make improvements to your existing system. Check out 'Where to get help', to see what grants are available.
