Household appliances

There are many devices in the home that use energy. In addition to the heating system you may have a cooker, fridge, freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer, TV, DVD and video. If you have a computer you’ll also have a screen, printer and so on. The amount of electricity that each uses, depends on the type and model, how old it is, and how you use it.

Try to replace old inefficient appliances when they get past their ‘sell by date'. If you have an old fridge or fridge-freezer, replacing it with a new energy efficient model could save up to £50 per year on your electricity bill. Even replacing a single standard lightbulb with a new low-energy equivalent could save a few pounds on your annual bill. And try to remember to turn things off when you’re not using them. Even on standby your TV, DVD, hi-fi, video and computer will keep using electricity.

Look out for schemes being run by energy companies offering free or discounted insulation and electrical appliances like fridges or lightbulbs. Check out 'Where to get help' for information on the grants you can apply for and who to contact.

Thinking about the energy used in the home
Finally, remember it costs nothing to close your curtains at dusk and turn off lights in parts of your home when they are not needed. Even these small actions will save a few pounds every year.
